Did you know that we spend a third of our life in bed and that getting a good night sleep directly affects your mental and physical health as well as the quality of your waking life? Fall short and it can take a serious toll on your daytime energy, productivity, emotional balance, and even your weight.

Many people put down their lack of sleep to insomnia brought on by stress, anxiety or poor sleeping habits, however, another thing to consider is the mattress that you are sleeping on. If you notice yourself tossing and turning, or waking up with aches and pains, it may be time to consider replacing your current mattress with a new one. Below are 4 signs that can help you determine if you need a new mattress.

Wake up with pain that you didn’t have:

If you’re waking up to pains in your neck, shoulders, back and lower back and you did not have these when you went to bed, your mattress may be the cause. The reason for this is that over their lifetime, mattresses lose the ability to support your body correctly while you’re sleeping.

Bumps and hollows:

If your mattress feels lumpy or you sink into it when you lie down, it may be time to start looking for a replacement. Although body impressions can form as you use the mattress, if they become more than 3.5cm deep, you would be best served by getting a new one.

Allergy symptoms:

Throughout your mattress’s lifetime, it will attract and harbour household allergens, dead skin cells and sweat which will lead to dust mites. These little creatures can cause allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy/red or watery eyes, nasal congestion etc.

I’ve bought a new mattress; how do I dispose of the old one?

Once you have decided to purchase a new mattress, the next thing you need to sort out is how to dispose of the old one. With that in mind, you have the following options:

Donate it

Most charities are happy to take used mattresses off your hands for free and you are helping those who are less fortunate than yourself. If you are considering donating your mattress to charity, please make sure that the item is clean, hygienic, still has the original fire label attached and to be fit for use.

Take it to the local tip/recycling centre

Depending on the type and size of the mattress, it may be quite heavy.  However, any mattress is an awkward size and you will need a suitable vehicle to transport it to the tip. If you wish to take it to the tip/recycle centre, make sure you have help from a few (strong) people to help as well as suitable transport. If you do not wish to contribute towards the bulging landfill issue, you could always take the mattress to your local recycling centre.

Waste Removal Company

Another option for getting rid of your old mattress is to use a specialist waste removal company such as us (Yes Waste) who will make sure that the mattress is recycled. Furthermore, we respond quickly to enquiries and can collect the mattress from inside or outside your property within an agreed 2-hour time frame. Furthermore, we’ll do all the moving and lifting, so you can just relax. If you would like to know more about getting rid of your mattress, take a look at our furniture removal service.

Please Note:
Whichever waste removal company you use, please make sure that they hold a valid waste carriers license (ours is CBDU117809), have insurance and that they will provide you with the relevant paperwork. Failure to do this may leave you susceptible to a legal charge if the company does not dispose of the mattress responsibly, for example; fly tipping.
